FVRA's Women's Racing Team 8+ Wins in Narragansett

FVRA's women's competitive team made an impressive showing in the Mayor's Cup Regatta at the Narragansett Boat Club in Providence on Saturday, May 29th. Contending with only a slight breeze and chop, the crew bolted together for an all round great performance. The team entered three races: masters 4+, masters 8+, and master double 2x. All rowed well but only the eight medaled.

The women's eight crushed their opponents, putting a sizable stretch of open water and eleven seconds between them and the second place boat. Even with the second place boat's time adjusted for its handicap, FVRA women took first place by more than seven seconds. They walked through the fleet and were still opening the distance between themselves and the other boats as they crossed the finish line. The eight was coxed by Kate Ruppar and stroked by April Umek. Behind her in 7 seat was the team captain, Ashley Shepard. Rowing behind the stern pair were Stacy Gitlin, Renee Jones, Carol Clark-Flanagan, Karen Duni, Nicole Rousseau, and Sabrina Lavieri.

The women's team will compete in several more regattas this sprint season before traveling to the master's nationals this August in New Jersey for the second year in a row. The team is coached by Steve Galett with help from April Umek. If you are interested in finding out more about the team, please use the contact information on this website.

Why: We need your support to help raise funds so that we can keep our equipment in working order and replace older boats as needed. Did you know that your annual membership dues support operating expenses but do not cover the replacement of old equipment? That’s right! All equipment purchases are done with generous donations from our members. Here is your chance to give back and help support FVRA. Our goal this year is to hit $2,000 and we need your support to do so. Even if your schedule keeps you from participating on August 21st, consider making a pledge towards someone who will be participating or by purchasing a FVRA t-shirt. Every dollar counts! And, your donation is TAX DEDUCTIBLE!

Rowing Relay for FVRA (1/2 or Full Marathon) Fundraiser

READY, SET...ROW: You and 9 of your FVRA rowing friends (or soon to be closest friends) will work together to row 13.1 or 26.2 miles. Starting at the Simsbury boathouse your team will row the beautiful Farmington River in both directions during a 6 hour time frame. Your group will come together with your team captain to decide how many miles each rower wants to row. Your team will come up with different boat combinations to complete the marathon. You'll feel the camaraderie and team spirit as your team pushes the limits on endurance and stamina to finish the 26.2 miles. Please visit the fundraising section for more information.
