Welcome to the Farmington Valley Rowing Association!
FVRA, as a club, offers sculling and sweep recreational rowing and racing opportunities. We have a great mix of rowers who enjoy being out on the river in set boats they have put together and/or being involved in the open rows and we have others interested in racing. In the short time I have been with the club, most of the racing has been by individuals putting a boat together for an event or two but we have not had a true "competitive" team. Last December, a group of women came together and committed to serious training and to being a competitive racing team. This new competitive group offers you, our members, an additional level of rowing. In fact, having a competitive team gives FVRA more visibility and attracts members interested in the competitive level.
The competitive group at this time is women with a wide range of ages and experience. The "founding" members initially solicited interest from club members in December 2007 asking who would be willing to make a serious commitment to training and racing. The commitment included winter aerobics and strength training along with tank sessions. Once the dock went in the commitment was to row at least 4 times per week, continue with other supporting workouts (running, erg, abdominals, etc.) and be available for the club races.
This competitive group has come forward with a policy statement, which the board reviewed in June and approved in July. Essentially, individuals interested in this level of competitive rowing will pay additional fees above the normal annual membership dues. This is due to the additional resources this group will utilize such as coaching, travel costs, off-season training and racing fees, equipment, etc. An additional cost for a competitive group is typical in rowing clubs.
As a member of FVRA I hope you can find what you want in rowing. No matter what your rowing goals are, I hope you will enjoy rowing and join us for the "field trips" and outings we have planned this season.
